Would the Air Force discharge me early to attend school?

My seperation date is in October 2008.

I’ve been accepted into UNC for the fall semester as a transfer student. They won’t accept transfer students for the spring semester.

I only have enough leave to get out a month early, in September. School starts in August.

Is it possible to get discharged a month or two early, honorably, and still get your G.I. Bill benefits?

I really don’t want to pass this chance up.

Do I go directly to my commander? My first sergeant? Or am I just chasing am impossible dream here?

And I’d rather go to UNC than Rose State on base. Just saying.

We’re talking one month early… its not THAT crazy is it?

They might let you if there is not a whole lot going on at your command. I was in the Navy and tried to get out early and they did not let me. I was supposed to get out Feb 06 and I applied for Fall 05 to school and they said that 5 months was too much time. They told me I could try again to ask for 2 months early to start in Spring 06 but I did not bother since I had 2 months leave saved up it would not have helped. I hope you at least give it a shot, and I hope they let you go! Good luck at UNC.

edit: By the way even if they don’t let you off Fall semester starts Aug 19 at UNC. So maybe, depending on your terminal leave date in September you would only miss a week or two in class. I am sure if you contacted your professors and told them your situation they might be willing to work with you. You only need 12 hours to be full time for GI Bill so if you can pick some relatively easy courses to take, you might be in luck.
