Why did Spain not return to being a republic?
Why did Spain not return to being a republic after fascism was defeated in Europe and Spain continued with the foundations left by nationalist/fascist Spain and not republican/anarchist Spain?
Spain continued with nationalist/fascist traditions after wwii, because she was still led by General Franciso Franco. Her form of government did not change with wwii, since she was a neutral during the war, and did not even receive Marshall Plan aid. Franco did not die until the 1970s, after which Spain went back to being a constitutional monarchy again. This made sense, because she was a monarchy before Franco; and so returned to this after his death.
Why didn’t Anarchism become a more important force? Though Anarchists led a lot of the opposition to Franco during the Spanish Civil War, it found itself no role after the war ended–Just as Communists, who led the opposition in Nazi-occupied areas
(Eg., Communist Marshall Tito of Yugoslavia, the Communists who kidnapped and hung Mussolini) had found no role after the war ended. Moreover, in Spain,
by the mid-1970s, the influence of Anarchism was largely forgotten.
