Why won’t money changers in Taiwan accept Philippine pesos ?

Over the last week I have visited nearly 20 banks in various places around Taiwan. All had money changer clearly advertised. However when I showed them Philippine pesos they looked at the notes like they were radioactive. Even stranger was the fact than many places accept other Asian currencies such as Thai Baht and Malaysian Ringgit so why not Philippine pesos as the country is less than 2 hours flight away.

The Philippine peso is not a “fully convertible” currency, meaning that is not for use outside its home country, so banks cannot readily exchange it. Fully convertible currencies include the US dollar, Japanese yen, EU euro, Hong Kong dollar, etc. Currencies that are not fully convertible include the Vietnam Dong and Bangladesh taka.
