What were the types of jobs/occupations and specialties of the Filipinos during the Japanese Occupation?
Please give me an in-depth answer.
If you were a Filipino civilian in Manila (or within the National Capital Region area), life was hard and freedom was somewhat limited. But there were jobs.
For example, the Japanese encouraged Filipino theater arts and humanities. However, anything that was derogatory to the Japanese – such as satire plays depicting the Japanese in a bad light – meant that the kempeitai (Japanese military police) would beat you up and torture you. But plays and concerts staged at the Metropolitan Theater (near the Quiapo bridge) provided enjoyment to rich and poor.
There were a number of newspapers and magazines running at that time (such as the Manila Tribune, Philippine Review and Liwayway), but they were under Japanese “observation.” You couldn’t write in English, but you could write in Tagalog.
White collar business was practically close to nil during that time. In fact, commerce, industry and trade as a whole suffered setbacks, resulting in widespread inflation. The fact that there was “Mickey Mouse” money circulated around – and that basic goods were sold at astronomical prices – meant that getting your daily fill meant that you had to become a master at going around the law. A shrewd and smart businessman during these times would have a sari sari store (small stall selling basic commodities in small quantities) full of basic goods – like rice, coffee, mango leaves, kangkong, corn, sugar, cigarettes – along with a small plot of land where one could grow mango, kangkong and other veggies, furniture acquired by trading with farmers, gold (acquired by extractions of farmers’ teeth or from the dead), polo shirts and contemporary getups (stolen from the interred dead, but sold as “secondary” wear).
During this time, it wasn’t uncommon to be a beggar, a homeless person, a robber or a killer-robber, as the runaway inflation made the purchase of goods a tough experience. Yes, there was law enforcement, but helpless not only because these agents of the law had no weapons (with which to frighten criminals into submission), but also because they understood the temper of the period.
There were bars and nightclubs too, and a lot of them housed the so-called “comfort women” and prostitutes.
However, if you were a Filipino civilian in the provinces, you suddenly found yourself rich. The old rich of the pre-WW II period would trade almost all (if not all) of their belongings – such as clothes and furniture – just for rice, various viands and cigarettes. Some were smart enough to manufacture and sell both doctored cigarettes (tobacco leaves wrapped in anything other than cigarette paper) and genuine American cigarettes to the unsuspecting city slicker. In fact, some of these “doctored” cigarrettes were wrapped in newspaper or books, thus eliciting a humorous outburst from the smoker that he was smoking the Enyclopedia Britannica
If none of these occupations suited you, the Filipino would either become a guerrilla fighting the Japanese or a spy for the Japanese.
