Can anyone explain to me what these mean about coins, i’m only new at this?

Mintage – This is the number of the coins produced.

Fine
Very Fine
Ex. Fine (Extremely Fine)
AU (About Uncirculated)
Uncirculated
Choice Uncirculated
Gem Uncirculated
All of the above are possible condition grades for a coin. There are more than just these. They will normally have a numeric value from 1 (being the worst possible) and 70 (the best possible).

Proof – Coins listed as proofs were minted using a different process than the ones that are for the general public to use. A coin in Proof will also have a condition grade assigned to it.

Brown, Red/Brown, and Red makes it look like you are talking about pennies in particular. These are descriptions used to describe the coloring of the coin. Brand new pennies are described as being Red. As they circulate and are handled, they start to turn darker and eventually lose all shine and become brown.

If you are going to start collecting, the best thing you can do is get educated about what you want to collect. I would recommend the Red Book of US Coins to get you started. You can normally find it at the library if you didn’t want to buy a copy. Here is a little bit about the book…
